The world's very best museums have been revealed in a definitive new poll.

From America and Europe to Russia and beyond, some of culture's greatest destination points have been ranked by millions of visitors from around the globe.

And, once again, Manhattan's Metropolitan Museum of Art has scooped the top accolade in TripAdvisor’s Travellers’ Choice Awards today – for the third consecutive year.

Founded in 1870, NYC's Met – which is located on the city's Upper East Side – scored peak position thanks to its varied collection spanning more than 5,000 years.

But it wasn't the sole success for USA, which also houses the world's second most-popular mausoleum – the National WWII Museum, in New Orleans.

Meanwhile, the Musee d'Orsay in Paris followed in third place.

Other venues celebrated in the world's Top 10 were: The Art Institute of Chicago (4th), The National 9/11 Memorial & Museum in New York (6th) and the National Museum of Anthropology (Museo Nacional de Antropologia) in Mexico City (7th).

The Acropolis Museum in Athens was listed in eighth position and Madrid's Museo Nacional del Prado was ranked in ninth place.

Capping the list, London's V&A was listed tenth, but – although trailing behind other global institutions – it found itself hailed as the very best heritage attraction in the UK.

In fact, the V&A has overtaken last year’s UK winner, the British Museum, and pipped both Paris’s famous Musee du Louvre (13th place) and Van Gogh Museum (17th place) in the European rankings.

Capital: London's Victoria and Albert Museum, in Kensington, capped the list and was the only UK entry in the global Top 10

As if that wasn't enough, this year's awards also put five of London's museums in Europe's Top 25, making the capital home to more winning museums than any other European city, including Paris and Berlin.

The V&A came out in 5th position, closely followed by the National Gallery in 6th, while the British Museum, Natural History Museum and Churchill War Rooms come in 13th, 14th and 15th place.

'For yet another year running the UK has come out with more winning museums than any other European country, along with the V&A being ranked tenth best in the world,' commented TripAdvisor spokesperson Hayley Coleman.

'With the soaring popularity of travellers from both the UK and worldwide visiting these museums, TripAdvisor offers travellers the chance to book tickets in advance and beat the queues to select attractions with skip-the-line passes.'

London is also home to the UK’s second best rated museum, the National Gallery, which has also been ranked sixth best in Europe and eleventh in the world.

What’s more, the capital boasts six winners in the UK top 10, making it the nation’s top city for best-rated museums. In addition to the V&A and the National Gallery, the British Museum, Natural History Museum, Churchill War Rooms and Imperial War Museum all feature on the list.

Tim Reeve, Deputy Director of the V&A, said: 'We are honoured to receive the UK Museum of the Year award, as rated by Trip Advisor’s travellers.

'2017 has been an exciting year for the V&A, with innovative and popular exhibitions and the opening of the V&A Exhibition Road Quarter; the biggest architectural intervention at the Museum in over 100 years. This summer we had our two busiest months in the Museum’s history.'
