All Dogs Go To Heaven (1989)
Another Don Bluth classic, this one has our ‘hero’ Charlie B. Barkin killed in the first 10 minutes by the gangster Carface. As he ascends to heaven, he’s taunted by a pink whippet who tells him about his life watch. Being a scoundrel, he steals it, winds it up and goes back to earth, but it told that he’ll never come back to heaven.
What follows is a revenge tale, where he cons an orphan who can talk to animals, so he can steal her money, and he’s got this perpetually ticking life watch that’s always in danger of being broken. When the orphan contracts pneumonia, Charlie sacrifices his life for hers, and finds his way into heaven. Is that macabre, or what?
